Draft Carbon Neutral Roadmap to be scrutinised

The Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel has today launched a review of the draft Carbon Neutral Roadmap, which was published by the Government of Jersey on 17 December 2021 for public consultation.

The review will evaluate and provide commentary on:

• How the recommendations made by Jersey's Citizens' Assembly on Climate Change have informed the policies proposed in the draft Roadmap
• The evidence that has been accumulated during the development of the draft Roadmap
• Feedback from the Government's public consultation

Public hearings will also be held with the Minister for the Environment, Deputy John Young and the Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, to explore how the policies have been developed.

Connétable Mike Jackson, Chair of the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Panel, commented: "The policies put forward in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap are only a starting point for what will inevitably be an enduring journey towards tackling the climate emergency and adopting and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Our review will evaluate whether the aims of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap adequately reflect the recommendations put forward by the people-powered approach of the Citizens' Assembly on Climate Change.

We will also consider the strategic direction and proposed delivery of carbon reduction policies to establish whether there are any areas of concern or gaps with the intention of reporting back to the States Assembly."

The Panel will publish its report and any potential amendments prior to the States' debate on the Carbon Neutral Roadmap in April 2022.
