Jersey's second Democracy Week to take place next week

22nd September 2021

Tuesday 28 September sees the start of Jersey's annual Democracy Week, with a range of events and activities both online and in-person. Following the success of last year's events, the week has been expanded to include a photography competition, a schools art project, and a meeting of the Youth Parliament in the States Chamber.

During the week, Islanders will be able to:

  • See and vote on your favourite Island Views Photography Competition entry – choose from almost 200 entries on display in the Royal Square and online

  • Enjoy a display of bunting decorated by primary school children, showing the things they love about Jersey, in the Royal Square (with thanks to Liberty Bus)

  • See a school bus being spray painted with ideas from Victoria College students about how they would use £1 million to improve the Island (see the 2020 bus with ideas from Highlands College students here)

  • Tune into live Q&A sessions with States Members via the States Assembly Facebook Page (topics detailed below)

  • Find out about standing in the 2020 General Election

  • Take a free tour of the States Chamber, which will be running throughout the week (booking required)

  • Learn more about the States Assembly with new animations and educational content on our website, social media channels, and in schools

  • Watch the first meeting of the Jersey Youth Parliament in the States Chamber via Teams (link to follow)

Jenny O'Brien, Head of Digital and Public Engagement for the States Greffe, said:

"Democracy Week is a fantastic opportunity for Islanders of all ages to find out more about Jersey's unique political system and understand how they can have their say in shaping the Island's future.

"With next year's General Election less than nine months away, it's great to see how much interest there is in the changes to the electoral system and the issues people care about – demonstrated by nearly 200 Islanders entering our 'Island Views' photo competition."

The week follows on from the Corn Riots festival (Thursday 23 – Monday 27), which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Code of 1771.
