States Assembly decisions on 30 April 2019

30th April 2019

On 30 April 2019, the States Assembly adopted the Commissioner for Children and Young People Law.  The Law was proposed by the Minister for Children and Housing, Senator Sam Mézec, and gives legal status to the Commissioner and the Commissioner's powers.

The Law was adopted by 47 votes to 0 in the third reading, with 1 abstention.  One amendment to the Law was agreed, which had been brought by the Care of Children in Jersey Review Panel and which sought to clarify the Commissioner's powers to request information.  The Panel's amendment was itself successfully altered by an amendment proposed by the Minister.

Also on 30 April 2019, the Assembly approved the principles of the Draft Public Finances Law, which seeks to enhance and change the way in which public monies are administered.  It will now be reviewed by the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel.  The Assembly also adopted the Explosives (Amendment) Law and started to debate the Draft Access to Justice Law.
