Students engage with Island politics through 25th Annual Youth Assembly

​Year 12 and 13 students from across the Island will join together for the 25th Annual Youth Assembly on Tuesday 28th March. The annual event, which is sponsored by the Jersey Branch of the CPA, provides students with an opportunity to learn about how Jersey's elected parliament works and aims to inspire young people to take a more active role in the democratic process.

The event is held in the States Chamber and mirrors a States Meeting as closely as possible to provide students with first-hand experience of the Assembly. The students will question Ministers and Assistant Ministers on a range of topics including; sports facilities, support for refugees, the curriculum and provision of mental health for under 18s.

The students will ask Oral Questions With Notice to a range of Ministers, followed by 15 minutes of posing Questions Without Notice to the Deputy Chief Minister. The students will then have the opportunity to debate a range of topics which they have selected, including mandatory National Service and free bus transportation.

Students from Beaulieu, De La Salle, Hautlieu, Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College will participate in this year's Assembly.

The Bailiff will formally open the event and chair the question period. Deputy Rob Ward, Chair of the Jersey Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), will preside over the Assembly and the Greffier of the States, Lisa Hart, will act as the Clerk. The Assembly will be webcast in the same way as a normal States meeting, as well as being broadcast on BBC Radio Jersey.
