Breakfast event to explore civic engagement with local employers

16th August 2023

On Wednesday 27 September, a breakfast event entitled 'Politics Matters' will take place as part of Jersey's fourth annual Democracy Week.

The event, aimed at employers and business leaders from all Island industries, will celebrate the benefits of civic engagement and how the business community can work together to help engage their workforces with the current issues being debated by the States Assembly - Jersey's elected parliament.

The event will be held from 8:00am to 10:00am and will be hosted by Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon and former journalist for BBC Radio Jersey and ITV Channel Television. Following Jupp's keynote speech, current States Members will take part in panel discussions on topics such as how to encourage Islanders to vote and stand for election.

Attendees will then have the opportunity to share and discuss their own ideas to increase engagement with the States Assembly throughout the political cycle, including voter turnout, every four years.

Chair of the Political Awareness and Education Sub-Committee, Deputy Carina Alves said: 'It's fantastic that Simon Jupp MP will be hosting the event, which I hope will emphasise the benefits of embedding civic engagement in the community. This event is part of an exciting programme for Democracy Week to encourage Islanders to engage with the Island's politics and the electoral cycle to help cultivate positive change.'
